The External Camera kit was developed to enable the quick mapping of high quality images from an external source onto a point cloud. Now you can use a high end digital camera to capture very high quality images and, with as few as 3 picks in Cyclone (more may be needed), texture map an entire point cloud top to bottom.

The process:

1. Capture camera images with camera set up after scanning

2. Combine images in PTgui (3rd party software included) to form a spherical image

3. Create cube image in Pano2QTVR (3rd party software included)

4. Import cube images into Cyclone and use 3 picks to texture map the point cloud. HDS6000 data shown before mapping images

5.Complete: HDS6000 data after image mapping

Concept

After scanning, a camera, fitted to a special bracket, replaces the scanner. The bracket is placed on the same tribrach the scanner used. A fish eye lens mounted on the camera is positioned on the bracket so that the focal center of the lens matches the optical center of the scanner (this is important for accurate image-to-point cloud texture mapping). The captured images are joined using special third party software to form cube map images (required by Cyclone). Then, in only a few minutes, images can be easily imported to Cyclone, and with only three matching picks, fully texturize a full dome scan. The same full dome texturing of a point cloud using the usual workflow would take several images and 50-70 matching picks.

Required Software

Cyclone Model , Scan or Survey

· The following software is provided in this workflow:

· PTgui-for stitching the camera images into spherical or equirectangluar image

· Panotools-a necessary plug-in for PTgui

· Pano2QTVR Gui-for conversion of the equirectangluar image into Cube Maps

Procedure

There are four stages to the workflow:

1. Camera setup and image capture

2. Installing the stitching and Cube Map creation software

3. Stitching of the images and creation of a Cube Map

4. Importing of the Cube Map into Cyclone and texturing the point cloud
